Providence Health System hospitals in Oregon will refund money to uninsured patients who received care there as part of a settlement of a lawsuit alleging the patients were charged inflated "retail" prices while insured patients got discount rates, plaintiffs' attorneys said yesterday.
The settlement is the first among 60 such lawsuits brought nationwide against nonprofit hospitals.
Under the settlement with Seattle-based Providence, uninsured patients will get a discount, said John Phillips, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys.
The lawsuit was originally filed in federal court and included some Washington hospitals, but it was refiled in Oregon state court.
Russ Danielson, chief executive of Providence Health System in Oregon, said in a statement that the hospital system disagreed with the allegations in the lawsuit but settled to avoid the cost of a trial and to allow the system to focus on providing care.
